چکیده

A variety of N2-fixers occur in oligotrophic waters and these diazotrophs make a substantial contribution to the nitrogen budget of the upper water column. A synthesis of previously published and new rate measurements for the North Atlantic provides insight into the role of two different groups of N2-fixers (Trichodesmium and small diazotrophs) in supporting N2 fixation in the tropical Atlantic. The highest rates of N2 fixation occurred in the western part of the basin, but the full data set showed no significant difference between the eastern and western parts of the basin in overall rates of N2-fixation by the two groups of diazotrophs. N2-fixation by Trichodesmium was strongly dominant in the western part of the basin while small diazotrophs played a much larger role to the east of 40 W. The reasons for this shift in dominance are unclear, as is the identity of the small organisms fixing N2 in the water column.

Distribution of diverse nitrogen fixers in the global ocean

[1] We employ a global three‐dimensional model to simulate diverse phytoplanktonic diazotrophs (nitrogen fixers) in the oceans. In the model, the structure of the marine phytoplankton community self‐assembles from a large number of potentially viable physiologies. Amongst them, analogs of Trichodesmium, unicellular diazotrophs and diatom‐diazotroph associations (DDA) are successful and abundant...

Diversity and Activity of Diazotrophs in Great Barrier Reef Surface Waters

Discrepancies between bioavailable nitrogen (N) concentrations and phytoplankton growth rates in the oligotrophic waters of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) suggest that undetermined N sources must play a significant role in supporting primary productivity. One such source could be biological dinitrogen (N2) fixation through the activity of "diazotrophic" bacterioplankton. Here, we investigated N2 ...

Biological N2 Fixation in the Upwelling Region off NW Iberia: Magnitude, Relevance, and Players

The classical paradigm about marine N2 fixation establishes that this process is mainly constrained to nitrogen-poor tropical and subtropical regions, and sustained by the colonial cyanobacterium Trichodesmium spp. and diatom-diazotroph symbiosis. However, the application of molecular techniques allowed determining a high phylogenic diversity and wide distribution of marine diazotrophs, which e...

Spatial analysis and investigation of Tele-connection patterns with drought in central Iran

This study, adopting an environmental approach to atmospheric circulation, estimates drought periods over a 20-year period (1992-2011) in 21 synoptic stations in Kerman, Yazd and Isfahan provinces, which share a long-term statistical period, using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). The data pertinent to 18 teleconnection patterns were derived and compared with climatic data of provinces un...
